Phil was the Academy of Music & Sound in Exeter’s first trainer/lecturer in recording techniques and music production firstly from his commercial studio in Exeter and also at the AMS centre in Coombe Street.

Phil has achieved significant success as a recording engineer, music producer, songwriter and musician having worked with Robert Plant for many years.

Phil first worked with Robert Plant on the album Now and Zen which he co-produced and co-wrote most of the songs. Phil also wrote songs for Robert Plant’s follow-up albums Manic Nirvana and Fate of Nations.

Following his work with Robert Plant, Phil wrote songs for singer Alannah Myles’, Recorded and produced Freeborn John by Rev Hammer 1996 on Cooking Vinyl and co-wrote the whole of The Levellers’ album Hello Pig. Phil also heads the popular all-star music festival act,”The Fabulous Good Time Party Boys”, which features members of the Levellers, Irish singer/songwriter Dan Donnelly, American musician Roy Harter, and two of his children, Alex Johnstone and Emily Johnstone.
